Program Description:
    The Institute on Race and Poverty is a national research center located at the University of Minnesota Law School. Established in 1993, the Institute seeks to promote understanding of the issues confronting racially segregated and low-income communities – communities caught at the intersection of race and poverty ? and general fiscal, land use and governance issues in American metropolitan areas. The Institute conducts legal and social science research; compiles data and publishes reports; performs public policy analysis; consults with non-profit organizations; government agencies and policy makers; hosts regional and national conferences; serves as a clearinghouse of information for scholars and advocates; and provides technical and legal services to communities in need. Much of its current work is focused on the issues of social and economic separation, regionalism and opportunity structures in metropolitan are
Duties:
    Interpret maps and data and summarize study findings in draft reports. Research questions raised by reviewers, make changes to draft reports where necessary, and produce final reports. Keep current and informed on regional issues through reading social science literature in the areas of race and regionalism, land use, state and local taxation, and regional governance and by attending seminars and conferences. Incorporate this research into the work products of IRP. Conduct special research and writing projects as requested by the Executive Director or Research Director. Edit or draft articles or organizational documents, correspondence, etc. as requested by Executive Director or Research Director. Assist in developing project grant proposals and submitting to local partners or foundations. Research and identify potential sources of support and project partners, including foundation requirements and guidelines, foundation and organization assets, and other useful information about potential funding sources and partners. Edit or draft communications materials about IRP?s mission and research findings for a variety of audiences including academics, elected officials, members of the press and other diverse audience
Qualifications:
    Required: Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning, related social science, or J.D.; demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research in the areas of social, racial and fiscal inequities. Very good writing skills. Preferred: Some journalism experience.
